Description
Manufactured in the 1930s by Louis Marx and Company of New York, the tinplate mechanical Benjamin Franklin Toy Thrift Bank featured three slots on top for nickels, dimes, and quarters. Each time a coin was inserted and the single lever pulled, the running total would appear in two front display windows. When the aggregate deposit reached ten dollars, the door would automatically open. The exterior of the cash register-shaped bank was illustrated in red, gold and black lithography, showing Ben Franklin’s portrait on one side, and two Hamburg-hatted businessmen on the other, waiting at the “Doors Open at $10:00” sign.
