Description

Part of a large line of cast-iron carriage toys produced in the late 19th century by the Kenton Hardware Co., the hand-painted “Cairo Express” features a gold figure with a tarboosh (or fez) on his head, seated in a cart pulled by a beautifully cast tan elephant. Also notable are the ornate star hubs on the wheels of the orange cart. Founded in 1890 as the Kenton Lock Manufacturing Company of Kenton, Ohio, the company produced locks and cast-iron products and toys for the home. Due to a patent dispute, toys became Kenton’s focus, eventually making it the largest manufacturer of cast-iron toys in the world. Image is 1288px wide.
