Description
Postwar Japanese Toy Packaging Assortment, various manufacturers, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, cardstock.
The decline of packaging creativity in one image. “Sailor Rowing Boat” is classic 1950s Japanese peak-illustration style, featuring bright and fanciful colors, far-off background elements (in this case, an amusement park) and large, declarative hand-drawn lettering.
Later we see the “Zig-Zag Express,” a table-top train design that borrows from the snake toys of the era with articulation and erratic movements.
Finally, we have “Crazy Chopper,” early 1970s cartoon-inspired design.
