Description

One of many horse race board games produced by the McLoughlin Bros. of New York, the 19th century Jerome Park Steeple Chase Game memorializes an especially lavish venue in Fordham, NY (now The Bronx).  Hoping to wrench the royal sport out of the clutches of local gambling rowdies, financier and devoted horseman Leonard W. Jerome, along with friend August Belmont, Sr., built Jerome Park Race Track in 1866. The renowned Belmont Stakes made its debut at Jerome Park, where its elegant clubhouse became known as “the great society rendezvous.” The box illustration shows a much different view of the grounds, however, with colorful jockeys and horses bounding over an obstacle with varying degrees of success.
